The Public Service Commission has appointed long serving Permanent Secretary Dr Niumaia Tabunakawai as the new designate High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea.

Chairman Josefa Serulagilagi said the appointment of a very senior officer to the position of High Commissioner is indicative of how Fiji values its relationship with PNG.

Serulagilagi said in light of the similarities that exist between PNG and Fiji, it is obvious that there are substantial benefits to be derived from the partnership between the two countries. He adds Tabuna-kawai's knowledge and expertise in the areas of forestry and fisheries will no doubt become an added advantage in trade relationships.

He adds PNG's long standing experience in mining, will also enable the High Commissioner to gain more knowledge, and to explore avenues for revamping Fiji's mining industry.

Dr Tabunakawai is expected to leave for PNG next week.
