Pacific sprint king, Banuve Tabakaucoro won gold for Fiji in the men’s 100m event last night as Fiji raked in six gold medals yesterday in the Pacific Games.

Tabakaucoro clocked a time of 10.55 seconds.

Speaking from Port Moresby, Tabakaucoro says while he is happy to win gold, some things did not go his way to get a better finish.

Tabakaucoro’s fastest time is 10.22 seconds.

The qualifying time for the Olympics is 10.16 seconds.

In the women’s 100m event, Younis Bese and Sisilia Seavula settled for silver and bronze medals respectively. Toea Wisil of Papua New Guinea won gold.

Meanwhile, Eugene Volmer won gold for Fiji in the men’s Triple Jump final with a jump of 15.27m.

In Karate, Fiji won four gold medals yesterday.

The Fiji men’s and women’s team won a gold each in the team Kumite event last night. Earlier yesterday, Joji Veremalua won gold for Fiji in the 75kg Kumite event while in the women’s category, Adi Drodrolagi Kidia-naceva took gold for Fiji in the 60kg Kumite.

In boxing, Winston Hill of Fiji won his fight after a split points decision while Fiji’s Sina Ruata beat Robert Gabriel of Papua New Guinea in the light heavyweight 81kg division.

In hockey, the Fiji men’s team thrashed Tonga 30-nil while the Fiji women’s team beat Papua New Guinea 5-4.

In beach volleyball, Fiji beat Tonga two sets to one in the men’s competition while Fiji lost to PNG and American Samoa by two sets in the women’s competition.

In volleyball, the Fiji men’s team beat Nauru by three sets.

In today’s events, Banuve Tabakaucoro will be taking part in the 200m heats at 1pm and he is expected to face stiff competition from PNG’s Nelson Stone.

In soccer, the Fiji Under 23 soccer team will face New Caledonia at 4.30pm in the second semi-final.

The Fiji Pearls will face Cook Islands at 7 tonight.

Looking at the Legend FM Pacific Games medal tally, Papua New Guinea is leading with 48 gold, 37 silver and 34 bronze. New Caledonia is in second place with 33 gold, 32 silver and 28 bronze.

Team Fiji is now in third place with 25 gold, 29 silver and 22 bronze.
