Pacific Sprint King Banuve Tabakaucoro will be the clear favourite to win the men’s 100 metres event at the Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea after he has set a new national record of 10.22 seconds at the Oceania Athletics Championships in Cairns last night.
Tabakaucoro’s new personal best of 10.22 seconds has surpassed the Pacific Games record of 10.36 seconds which was set by Jone Delai.
The former Marist Brothers High School sprint champion also went on to win the 100 metres run and also set a new record at the Oceania Athletics Championships.
Jone Delai was the previous national record holder with a time of 10.26 seconds.
Banuve settled for second place in the mens 200m final during the Oceania Athletics Championships in Australia.
Tabakaucoro ran a time of 20.68secs while Jeremy Dodson of Samoa who took out first place ran a time of 20.57secs.
Fiji will be represented in 25 sports at the Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea which will be held from the 4th to the 18th of July.
