The Post and Telecom Workers Union claims that Telecom Fiji Limited has started to issue redundancy packages to its workers in the West without the two parties coming to an agreement on the matter.

It was earlier confirmed that over 170 TFL staff will be made redundant as part of the reforms being undertaken by the company.

And the Union is today trying to stop Telecom from issuing redundancy packages until the Tribunal has ruled on the motion before it.

According to Union General Secretary Attar Singh the package offered is increased to 3 months pay plus 2 weeks pay for each year of service and the retirement benefits is also given to those who qualify.

Singh said they have not agreed to this package and are disappointed that Telecom Fiji is doing this without concluding an agreement with the Union and while legal issues are still before the Tribunal waiting to be heard on July 22nd.

When contacted this afternoon, TFL Media Liaison Officer Vanessa Kilner said Telecom will allow the negotiations to take place and they will release a statement on the matter early next week.
