TC Gene likely to hit soon
People living in Viti Levu, Beqa, Western Vanua Levu, Vatulele, Lomaiviti, Yasawa and the Mamanuca group are advised to take precautions as Tropical Cyclone Gene is heading towards the main island of the Fiji group.
Nadi Weather Office Director, Rajendra Prasad said Gene is likely to pass over the group at about midnight.
Parts of Rakiraki and Tavua are expected to experience strong winds from this hour. Nadi, Lautoka and Sigatoka areas are expected to be affected from midnight tonight.
Meanwhile Prasad said people should expect torrential rain and flooding is likely in many areas of Viti Levu.
National DISMAC Officer, Aisea Quminakelo is now advising people to take precautions now.
A gale warning is now in force for Viti Levu, Beqa, Vatulele, Western part of Vanua Levu, Lomaiviti group, Yasawa and Mamanuca group and nearby smaller islands.
Tropical Cyclone Gene which is a category 1 cyclone, was located near 17 decimal 0 South, 178 decimal 7 East or about 90 kilometres to the South West of Labasa or 160 kilometres East North East of Nadi at about 1pm today.
The cyclone is moving South West at about 20 kilometres per hour and intensifying slowly. Close to the centre, Tropical Cyclone Gene is estimated to have damaging gale force winds with average speeds of upto 65 to 75 kilometres per hour and momentary gusts to 140 kilometres per hour increasing to 85 kilometres per hourin the next 17 hours.
On the current track, the cyclone centre is expected to be located at about 60 kilometres North North East of Nadi at 6pm today and about 100 kilometres West of Nadi at midnight tonight.
