Tropical Cyclone Ella intensified overnight and is now a Category 2 system with increasing damaging gale force winds.

A Tropical Cyclone Alert is now in force for Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, Lau and Lomaiviti group.

A strong wind warning remains in force for the same areas.

Nadi Weather Office Forecaster Stephen Meke says Cyclone Ella has changed its track a bit which means that it is projected to go right over Vanuabalavu, Vanua Levu and Taveuni.

The centre of the cyclone is currently located about 430 kilometres North East of Vanuabalavu and 450 kilometres East North East of Udu Point.

Close to its centre, the cyclone is estimated to have average winds of 95 kilometres per hour and momentary gusts to 130 kilometres per hour.

On this track, the cyclone may bring damaging gale force winds over Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, Lau and Lomaiviti group from late today to tomorrow.

Meke also says that Ella could even intensify further as it enters the Fiji group.

They are also certain now that the tropical cyclone will enter the Fiji group by tomorrow however the effects of the system will be felt from late today.

Expect rough seas.

For the rest of Fiji - expect wind speeds of 45 kilometres per hour and gusts to 80 kilometres per hour.

Heavy rain is expected for most parts of the country.

Expect flash flooding in low lying areas.
