All plans to have security cameras placed in strategic places around the capital city have been put on hold as the Suva City Council looks at ensuring that rates owed to the council is collected.

Special Administrator for Suva and Lami, Chandu Umaria said that at the moment close to $17 million is owed in rates to Suva while close to $2 million is owed to the Lami Town Council.

Initial plans were to have 52 CCTV camera set up in various places around the capital city after recommendations from stakeholders.

Umaria said that while the cameras are for the security of people in the city, the more pressing issues need to be addressed.

Meanwhile, the Local Government Minister Colonel Samuela Saumatua also stressed that once people pay up outstanding rates then only will they have high standard roads.
