A 25-year-old man charged with manslaughter was today handed a suspended sentence by Suva High Court Judge Justice Daniel Goundar.

During the trial, the High Court heard that on 18th November, 2006 Vilive Naimama while under the influence of cannabis, punched a man after coming out of a nightclub in Nausori.

The post mortem report showed that the victim died of head injuries.

Naimama pleaded guilty to the charges and admitted in court that the attack on the victim was unprovoked.

In mitigation, he told the High Court that he was single, unemployed and had only attained class one education and came from a broken home and stressed that he regretted his actions.

Judge Goundar while handing down the sentence said that taking into account the facts that Naimama has pleaded guilty, co-operated with the police and had spent 18 month in custody, he sentenced him to two years imprisonment, suspended for two years.
