The Permanent Secretary for Provincial Development and National Disaster Controller has today dismissed the views of some critics that the interim government is not doing enough to provide relief to those seriously affected by Tropical Cyclone Gene.
Manasa Vaniqi said the surveys and assessments were difficult to be carried out due to the flash flashing over the past few days.
However he said officials are trying their best to get to all the affected areas.
Meanwhile Interim Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama has declared a State of Natural Disaster over the areas severely affected by Tropical Cyclone Gene.
While making the announcement on behalf of the Interim PM, the National Disaster Controller, Manasa Vaniqi said this step has to be taken to assist the DISMAC officials with their work.
Vaniqi said the huge population affected requires the mobilization of a major emergency relief and rehabilitation programme. He said this is an important exercise as it would provide detailed information about the nature and scope of the disaster and the status of the affected people.
The Permanent Secretary said the field assessment would provide the basis for the determination of the relief and rehabilitation programme which include food rations, temporary shelter, housing and agriculture rehabilitation programmes. The Prime Minister's National Disaster Relief and Rehabilitation Fund Trust Account, number 4706578 for financial contributions to assist the cyclone affected victims.
