The Surfing decree which comes into effect from this Friday is expected to attract another 20,000 visitors to our shores every year.
Attorney General and Minister for Tourism Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum said opening up the surfing spots in Fiji to everyone will bring positive results for the tourism industry.
He said this will also have a trickledown effect ensuring the locals can have a new means of making a living.
This applies to Tavarua Island, which is home to some of the best surfing waves in the world called "Cloud Break" and to Namotu island which restricted access to surfers.
The decree permits unrestricted access to and use of any surfing area by any person for the purpose of surfing or any other water sport without having to obtain any approval from any person and without the payment of any monies or compensation for the use of any such surfing area.
Members of the Surfing Association are elated with the decision and revealed that previously they had to pay $25 to surf in the exclusive zones and were only given four hours on Saturdays to enjoy the world class surfs.
They say the only time they could surf in the exclusive zones was during competitions which is only once or twice a year.
