The Constitutional Officers' Commission has announced the appointment of New Zealand-based lawyer Dr. Maurice Coughlan as the new Supervisor of Elections.

Commission Chairman Rishi Ram confirmed that they have concluded a contract for Dr. Coughlan for a 3-year-term after consultations with the Interim Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

Ram said Dr. Coughlan has wide skills and qualifications in corporate structure, change management and is familiar with board and administration functions and governance.

Dr. Coughlan has 15 years experience as a self employed barrister in civil and criminal and other tribunals and also worked as a resource and project lawyer for the Papua New Guinea government for 6 years.

The new Supervisor of Elections is now winding up his business in New Zealand and will start in Fiji in early May.

Ram also told Fijivillage that Coughlan's salary package will be topped up through Australian aid.
