Australian Rugby Union chief executive Bill Pulver has revealed that Super Rugby in Australia will lose money this year but they are putting together plans to address the problem.

The Australian Rugby have had a difficult time recently but last year’s British and Irish Lions tour was a big boost for the Union.

Last year, the Union started with a deficit of $8.3 million but the British and Irish Lions tour had a cash surplus of $10m by the end of the year.

Pulver said that Super Rugby poses the biggest financial challenge for the Australian Rugby Union.

Few Unions who are facing tough times are Melbourne Rebels and New South Wales Waratahs.

He added that players need to play a role in keeping their wage demands realistic.

The Super Rugby season kicks off this Sunday with the Cheetahs taking on the Lions while the Sharks play the Bulls.

The Crusaders will meet the Chiefs in their opening clash next Friday.

Next Saturday, the Highlanders play the Blues while Brumbies play the Reds.

The Sharks take on the Hurricanes on Sunday morning.
