It has been estimated that almost half a million tonnes of sugar cane has been lost due to expiry of land leases.
The Sugar Cane Growers Council has revealed that the tonnage of sugar cane production continues to decrease yearly and urgent steps need to be taken.
Council Chairman, Jain Kumar has confirmed that stakeholders involved in the sugar industry need to work together to renew land leases that are about to expire.
