The Fiji Sugar Corporation said the problem regarding the shortage of sugar in the local market has been rectified.

FSC Chief Executive Officer, Deo Saran said the problem had arisen due to the illegal exporting of sugar by some local companies.

Saran has assured that FSC is now in a position to meet the local sugar demand.

Meanwhile, FSC in conjunction with the Customs Department is carrying out a thorough investigation in relation to the illegal exporting of sugar from Fiji.

Saran has confirmed that some companies were exporting sugar using the consolidated cargo which the companies use to export other items overseas.

He said these companies do not hold a licence to export sugar, as the FSC has the exclusive rights.

When asked on what sort of action can be taken against those companies who were illegally exporting sugar, Saran stated that it=s for the Customs Department to decide on the matter.
