Sugar production needs to be raised
Those were the words of Reserve Bank Governor Sada Reddy who said Fiji really does not need to work on new exports, rather all it has to do is fix the sugar industry and make it viable as sugar cane is a resilient crop.
Reddy said to reach the 300,000 tons in 3 years, there needs to be land reforms, the increasing of milling capacity, the improvement of efficiency in FSC operations, the reduction of transportation costs, the improvement of productivity through farm rationalization and mechanization plus good farm husbandry practices and diversification, for example through ethanol and co-generation amongst others.
