A major initiative to boost sugar production and quality and fetch above world market prices for sugar from Fiji was launched today in Labasa.
Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama launched the first ever Labasa Cane Growers Fair Trade Certification initiative at a function in Labasa this afternoon marking a significant milestone for the sugar industry.
Bainimarama revealed that once fair trade certified, the price of sugar from Fiji would double on the world market.
The Prime Minister also revealed that Tate and Lyle in the UK have already indicated it would purchase a significant portion of sugar from Fiji.
Commodore Bainimarama stressed that Labasa being chosen ahead of the other seven cane districts in Fiji to launch the initiative is indicative of government’s Look North Policy.
