The only way to put the sugar industry back on its feet and to be competitive in the world market is to secure the 350 million dollars offered by the European Union.
Those are the words of Former Prime Minister and SDL Leader, Laisenia Qarase who said the sugar industry will continue to suffer if the status quo remains.
Qarase said the sugar industry cannot wait and tough decisions have to be taken by the interim government.
Qarase said the availability of land for cane farming is not the issue but the focus should be on production and efficiency as he believes that sufficient land is available for cane farming.
The Reserve Bank of Fiji said so far this year performances in key sectors have been varied. Relatively strong growth has been recorded in visitor arrivals, gold production and mineral water output while the cane and sugar industries as well as the building and construction sectors have registered notable declines.
