Substandard construction cause of damage
That was the sentiment of Minister for Poverty Alleviation and Social Welfare, Doctor Jiko Luveni while addressing the stakeholders at the two day workshop on Protection in Emergency workshop.
Doctor Luveni stresses that the Fiji public know the meaning of natural disasters and even disaster preparation but many do not realize the need to be protected.
Meanwhile, DISMAC official Akuila Quminakelo in his presentation also highlighted the need for more awareness to be raised stressing that Government can only help to a certain extent but the community needs to step in.
He added that the Police provide security at evacuation centers and it is the Military to ensure the proper management of the centers but in the end it is the community who step in to make sure that their lives are safe and that of their neighbors.
He added that at the moment, the Ministry of Natural Disasters is carrying out a review of the National Disaster Management Act to ensure that families and communities are also included in the welfare and safety of others during natural disasters.
The two day workshop continues at the Novotel Lami Conference room.
