Fifteen students from 15 Secondary schools were given certificates and trophies for being winners of an essay competition with the support from the New Zealand High Commission.

Two students who were given the Certificate of Distinction were Sekaia Niumataiwalu of Yat Sen Secondary School and Ashwini Prakash of Dayanand Anglo Vedic College in Suva.

The title of the Essay was about the boat Syria that left Culcutta, India and sank at Nasilai waters in Fiji 125 years ago.

Niumataiwalu said his story was based on the contemporary aspects of race relations with an Auckland park bench acting as a pothole through time and space back to the back of the boat Syria.
