Students of a primary school in Labasa are living in fear after they were allegedly threatened with a cane knife and told not to use a road which leads to their school.

The incident took place on Friday afternoon where it is alleged that a member of a mataqali near Nabekabu Primary School confronted about 20 students on the Vunivaivai road and threatened them with a cane knife.

Students then had to make their way home through a bush path.

The president of the Nabekabu Crime Prevention Committee Josefa Railogo confirmed that they were shocked after they heard about the incident.

Speaking in Fijian, Railogo confirmed that the same member of the mataqali is alleged to have held the shirt collar of the Assistant Head Teacher in the school on the same day and also threatened him not to use the road.

According to Railogo, the road belongs to the state and not the mataqali.

Labasa Police have confirmed receiving the report and they are expected to take students and teachers statements tomorrow morning before questioning the member of the mataqali.
