A 21 year old tertiary student was today sent to five years in prison after being convicted of robbery with violence.

The court was told today that Ropate Tabua of Suva approached a woman from her back when she was waiting for a taxi in front of her gate on the roadside.

Tabua pulled her back and placed a sharp object into her stomach and demanded cash.

Tabua took $10 and a mobile phone worth $200 from the woman.

Magistrate Thushara Rajasinghe while sentencing Tabua said this act of robbery with violence is full of cruelty and should be condemned by the civilized society.

The Magistrate stressed that a number of young offenders charged and produced before the court for the offences of property theft is alarmingly increasing in the recent past.

Magistrate Rajasinghe added in the circumstance of this case he is of the view that a severe sentence is served.
