Cabinet has approved the promulgation of the domestic violence decree and changes to related laws.
Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Kaiyum said this new decree will give additional powers to courts and the police to prevent domestic violence.
According to Sayed-Khaiyum, a change has been made to the Marriage Act which will require compulsory counseling on domestic violence by the marriage officer to the couple who wish to be married, and a change to the Penal Code and Criminal Procedure Code to give wider sentencing discretion to magistrates and judges when sentencing for domestic violence.
