People in the Central and Eastern divisions are now urged to prepare as water levels are rising in major rivers.

The water level in the Rewa River continues to rise gradually to warning levels.

According to a government statement, those residing in low lying areas and areas within the vicinity of the Rewa River are advised to be alert, to prepare emergency supplies and be aware of their nearest evacuation center.

The general public is advised to refrain from crossing flooded roads and areas.

Parents are advised to supervise children at all times.

The Central Division Emergency Operation Centre can be contacted on 3477000 or 9906320.

 

At sea:

Three people have been reported missing after the boat they were travelling in capsized near Ovalau this morning.

Police Spokesperson Atunaisa Sokomuri says eight people had left Ovalau for Motoriki.

Sokomuri says five of them managed to swim to shore.

Villagers residing along the Tailevu North coastline and Ovalau are urged to keep a look out for the three missing people.

Roads:

People who want to travel to upper Naitasiri are advised seven roads have been closed as water levels continue to rise in the Wainimala River.

These are Mataisau Road, Waima Road, Wainikovu Road, Navulokadi back road, Waila Road, Naivucini Road and Lutu Road.

Members of the public are advised to refrain from using these roads until further notice.

Emergency operation officials based in Vunidawa are closely monitoring the situation.

The Nabouwalu Road in the Northern Division is currently closed as the Makolei Bridge has been washed away.

According to the Fiji Roads Authority, the road will be closed until the bridge is repaired.

The Koroinisolo road in Vatubogi, Bua is also closed due to a fallen tree.

A strong wind warning remains is in force for eastern Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, Lau and Lomaiviti group.

The Nadi Weather Office says we are experiencing strong winds and heavy rain because of a tropical depression which lies slow moving over Fiji. 

People can expect strong winds with average speed of 45km/hr gusting to 65km/hr over Eastern Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, Yasawa and Mamanuca Group with rough to very rough seas.

A heavy rain warning is also in force for eastern and northern Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, Yasawa and Mamanuca group.

A flood warning has also been issued by the Nadi Weather Office for the low lying areas and areas adjacent to Wailotua station and areas downstream of Wainibuka River.

A flood alert is in force for the low lying areas and adjacent to Rakiraki town and areas downstream of Rakiraki town.

Meanwhile, Tropical Cyclone Ula has intensified and has developed into a category 3 system.

It was located 330km south east of Apia early this morning and is moving west south west at 11km per hour.

Nadi Weather Office Director Ravind Kumar says they expect tropical cyclone Ula to enter the Fiji group early tomorrow morning.

He says people in the Eastern Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, Lau and Lomaiviti group need to prepare now.

The estimated winds around the center of Ula are about 65 knots and it is expected to maintain a west south west track for the next 24 to 48 hours.

He says on the projected path, it is expected to lie 520km east of Lakeba in Lau at 4am tomorrow.

Kumar says the system is expected to weaken as it approaches the Fiji group and enter Fiji waters as a category 2 system early tomorrow morning.

However, Kumar says people can still expect strong winds and heavy rain.

Buses:

Fiji Bus Operators Association President Parmod Chand says only Tacirua Transport has called off their operation because of fallen trees in their routes and rising water level.

Chand adds operation should normalise once the Fiji Roads Authority is able to clear the roads.

Fiji Roads Authority says Kings and Queens highway are open however motorists are advised to take caution of flying debris.

Electricity:

Fiji Electricity Authority says a high voltage power line is broken due to a fallen tree in Dilkusha, Nausori which has caused power outage in many areas in Nausori.  

In the Northern Division, Malau and many areas in Savusavu are also without power supply.

There are also broken power lines in Nasova and Cawaci in Levuka.

FEA is appealing to members of the public not to touch any fallen power lines.

Evacuation centres:

National Disaster Management Office Director Akapusi Tuifagalele has confirmed that an evacuation centre has been opened in the Central Division.

Tuifagalele says Kalabu Secondary School is now open for people to take shelter.

He adds that no one is currently at the school and they are working on opening other evacuation centres in other parts of the country.

26 people from Sorua settlement in Lokia, Nausori are currently taking shelter at the LDS church in Lokia which has been opened as an evacuation centre.
