Diwali is only five days away and the Fiji Retailers Association has called on all its members to ensure they do not sell banned fireworks as those found guilty will face huge penalties.
President, Himmat Lodhia said so far they have not received any complaints on the sale of banned fireworks.
He added strict checks have been conducted.
People found to be selling or using banned firecrackers will lead to penalties under the Trade Standards and Quality Control Decree 1992 and upon prosecution carries fines of up to $25,000.
Banned fireworks include shells (cylindrical/spherical), firecrackers, aerial wheels, mines, rockets (moon travelers etc) and rockets without sticks.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade confirmed that fireworks can be used any day of the year, but within the time frame of 5pm to 10pm however for Diwali and New Years the time frame is from 5pm to midnight.
Meanwhile, it is confirmed that fountains, sparklers, spinners, low hazard fireworks, wheels, helicopters, ground spinners, and 21 shot candles are permitted for use.
