Ousted Prime Minister, Laisenia Qarase has today hit out at the statement made by the Interim Attorney General that the politicians calling for Mahendra Chaudhry to resign, are political points scoring.
Qarase said they are dealing with a serious issue where an inquiry is being held against an Interim Minister while he is on fully paid leave.
The Interim Attorney General said critics of the Mahendra Chaudhry inquiry should stop the political point scoring by calling on the Interim Finance Minister to resign.
Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum stresses that Interim Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama is the Acting Interim Finance Minister and there will be no interference by anyone in relation to the inquiry.
He said people should also understand that the former SDL Minister, George Shiu Raj stepped aside as he was facing criminal charges and in this case there are no charges against Chaudhry.
Sayed-Khaiyum said politicians like Laisenia Qarase, Mick Beddoes and Pramod Rae are known for criticizing any decisions made by the interim administration.
However Ousted Prime Minister, Laisenia Qarase said Chaudhry should resign.
He said since December 5th 2006, the interim government has terminated those in senior positions after receiving certain allegations against them, and it should do the same with Chaudhry.
Qarase also raises the question on why the details of the inquiry
was made public after the team had already started its work.
Chaudhry said he will speak later.
According to Sayed-Khaiyum the team is headed by Bruce Cowley, a partner in the Minter Ellison law firm in Australia, a member of the International Bar Association and is familiar with laws in Fiji as he has carried out a number of assignments in Fiji since the SVT Government days.
Another member of the team is Russel Postle, a tax specialist and a member of the Forensic Accountants Special Group of the Institute of Accountants in Australia along with former Deputy PM and Education Minister, Taufa Vakatale.
