Bold steps are being taken to try and introduce wheat farming in the country with 49 different varieties being researched at the Legalega Research Center in Nadi.
Agriculture Ministry's Acing Senior Research Officer Shalendra Prasad said the wheat varieties have been brought in from the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center in Mexico and are being tested in the field.
Prasad said if the trials are successful, it would open up a whole new industry and would benefit the economy.
