Figures released by the Bureau of Stats reveal that Fiji imported more than they are exported in the month of May alone.

According to the Fiji Islands Bureau of Statistics provisional data for the month of May, Fiji imported a total of $301.5 million worth of goods and exported only goods worth $102 million.

When compared to the same period in 2007, it showed that there was an increase of $91.1 million dollars in imports and a decrease of $1.9 million for exports.

According to the Bureau, one reason was an increase in the demand for Vegetable products such as Potatoes and wheat, along with an increase as well for Machinery for the Sugar industry, and telephone sets.

Another one of the main products that contributed to the huge increase in imports was mineral products especially industrial diesel oil which was 21.9 percent of the total $91.1 million dollars.

Fiji is also seen to import a lot from Australia and Singapore.
