The Government said the statement by the Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum that the Ministerial Contact Group will visit Fiji on the 28th of this month is incorrect.

In a statement, Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs Amena Yauvoli said no such visit has been agreed.

Forum Secretary General Tuiloma Neroni Slade had revealed that the Pacific Islands Forum Ministerial Contact Group will visit Fiji again on the 28th of this month just a day after plans for the new Pacific Islands Development Forum and the new secretariat were unveiled in Nadi.

Slade said since last August, there have been significant developments in relation to the Fijian government’s preparations for parliamentary elections in 2014.

He said these developments have included substantive changes to the constitution-making process which commenced last year, as well as the introduction of a decree regulating the status of political parties.

Slade said these and other issues have been considered by the Forum Ministerial Contact Group on Fiji which visited Fiji on 12th April this year.

The Contact Group will submit its report for the Leaders’ consideration at the upcoming Pacific Islands Forum in Marshall Islands next month.

Fiji remains suspended from the Pacific Islands Leaders Forum.
