The State has applied for a stay to be issued on the proceedings in two cases taken to the High Court by terminated members of the Great Council of Chiefs.

Representing the state Lawyer Adish Narayan today submitted that the case where the former GCC members are challenging the Ministerial decision to promulgate the Fijian Affairs GCC Regulation and the termination of the GCC members be stayed as they have appealed an earlier decision by Judge Justice Jiten Singh.

Justice Singh in that case had granted leave to the terminated GCC members for a Judicial Review of the President's decision regarding the GCC Composition promulgation.

Narayan submitted that the High Court case should also be stayed pending the outcome of the appeal filed against the High Court ruling of the Qarase/Bainimarama case as both appeals would be heard in March next year.

Judge Justice Thomas Hickie will make a ruling on the matter on notice.
