Fiji's sprint queen Makelesi Bulikiobo has put up another sterling performance on the opening day of the Australian Athletics Championship.

Bulikiobo is through to the 400 meters final after she won her heat in a time of 53.08 seconds. She will now feature in the final tonight but will have to be at her best to beat Victoria's Tamsyn Lewis, who recorded the best time in this event with a time of 52.79 seconds.

Meanwhile it seems that Leslie Copeland's dream of competing at this year's Olympics may be shattered after he failed to qualify for the second round in the Open Men's Javelin Throw. Copeland finished in 11th place with a throw of 66.72 meters.

New Zealand based Niko Verekauta and Marist Brothers High School sprinter Iowane Dovumatua is yet to compete in the championship.
