The Ministry of Education is calling on parents and teachers to spend more time with their teenage children.

Education Minister Filipe Bole's comments follow revelation that over 1000 young girls between the ages of 13 to 19 got pregnant last year.

Meanwhile, Adolescent Reproductive Health officer Sulueti Duvaga speaking on the statistics said that the main reason was that teenagers are left un-supervised.

Bole adds that the time has come for parent’s to be open about the topic of sex and pre-marital sex as consequences of their actions could hinder their progress from teenagers to adulthood.

The Health Ministry statistics show that Suva recorded the largest number of teenage pregnancy cases last year, with a total of 358 cases.
