Land Transport Authority is hopeful that the installation of speed cameras on roads this month will assist in reducing road accidents.

The road death toll has decreased from 26 to 19 this year compared to the same period last year.

LTA will set up 30 road safety billboards along the Queens Highway from Suva to Nadi and the authority is partnering with hotels and resorts along the highway to put up billboards that will be constantly in drivers faces reminding them of the need to drive more responsibly.

LTA chief executive officer Naisa Tuinaceva said hoteliers and resorts will sponsor the billboards, adding that more than half of the road fatalities occurred in the Western Division.

A national plan to improve road safety and reduce road traffic accidents that cost the Government on average $30 milion to $40m annually is being put together.
