These are the sentiments of the police as 2010 starts off with five bus drivers and 32 drivers expected to appear in special court sittings in Suva, Nausori and Navua this morning facing charges of drunk driving and other traffic offences.
These drivers were all booked from New Year's Eve to today.
Assistant police spokesperson Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri said the five bus drivers were arrested in Wailekutu, Lami, yesterday morning when they were transporting passengers for picnics in Deuba.
He said what is more of a concern to them is that now, bus drivers are also being found driving under the influence of liquor, which is very dangerous as they are responsible for their passengers' lives.
Meanwhile, taxi drivers are being urged to be cautious when picking up passengers over this long weekend to ensure their safety at all times.
During the New Year celebrations, Fijivillage noticed that taxi services were in high demand with people having to wait for hours to get a taxi while some taxi drivers refused to transport passengers who were under the influence of alcohol.
However, Fiji Taxi Union general secretary Rishi Ram said it is better for taxi drivers to be safe than to regret later.
