The Parliamentary Secretariat is yet to decide on whether it will deal with the issue regarding the word ‘kaisi’ uttered by a parliamentarian in parliament last week.

Speaker of the House, Doctor Jiko Luveni said they are assessing whether they will take the issue further or negotiate a resolution between the two sides involved.

When asked on what is being done about this issue as the Prime Minister had officially raised concern in parliament, Doctor Luveni says they are looking at how this can be handled.

She said they are yet to identify the person who had made the derogatory comment.

The Speaker had also stressed that a final ruling on the use of un-parliamentary language has been made in parliament and that it would not be tolerated in the future.

Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama has already said that it is unfortunate to see that members of both the opposition parties are stuck in a time warp.

He then gave an example about last Tuesday where a member of the Opposition shouted “kaisi” at one of his Ministers.

Bainimarama said this sort of behaviour may have been acceptable under the SVT and SDL governments, but there is no place for it in our new Parliament and Fiji as a whole.

The Leader of Opposition, Ro Teimumu Kepa said none of the opposition MP’s uttered the word.

She said someone may have said ‘kaise’.

Hansard has only recorded a chorus of interjections instead of the actual comments made by MP’s on that day.
