World Cup host South Africa suffered one of their worst defeats losing to Uruguay 3-nil in their second pool game this morning.

It was a game dominated by Uruguay throughout the first half and they led 1-nil at half-time.

Uruguay scored another two goals in the second half to enjoy a 3-nil win and a 4 points lead in Pool A after holding France to a nil all draw in their opening pool game.

South Africa will now need to upset France in their last pool game next Wednesday to stay in contention of a place in the last 16.

In other match this morning, Switzerland pulled off the biggest shock so far at the FIFA World Cup as Gelson Fernandes's strike against the run of play earned them a 1-0 win against European champions and joint tournament favourites Spain.

Spain predictably dominated possession but were hit on the break seven minutes into the second half as the Swiss recorded a first win over Spain in 19 attempts.

The European champions from Spain enjoyed almost total control of the game in Durban but were wasteful in front of goal, and went behind after 52 minutes when a long ball found its way through to Fernandes, who bundled it into the net.

The result piles pressure on Spain, who were widely tipped to finally end decades of underachievement on the game's biggest stage as they slumped to only their second defeat in 49 games and they could now be forced to face Brazil in the second round if they finish Group H as runners-up.

As it was, Switzerland held firm for a truly memorable victory   their first in a World Cup opener since 1954.

In other results last night, Chile beat Honduras 1-nil.

Coming up tonight at 11.30pm, Argentina will take on South Korea, at 2am Greece will play Nigeria and at 6.30am France face Mexico.
