It was not just the New Zealand sevens team that lost in Rio - Sonny Bill Williams' ambulance driver also lost his way as he took the star to hospital after his Olympic‑ending injury.

Williams was forced off as New Zealand suffered a shock 14‑12 loss to 10th ranked Japan in the opening round this morning.

He could be out of action for up to nine months as he rehabilitates, throwing his future plans with the All Blacks into disarray.

The injury occurred when he took a crash ball into two defenders.

He had to be assisted off the field and then moved into the medical room through a golf cart.

His ambulance driver then reportedly lost his way to hospital.

Williams' sister Niall said she had spoken to her brother who confirmed the ambulance mix‑up.

Niall told New Zealand's TV One that the ambulance driver got a bit lost which was a bit funny.

Meanwhile, Former All Blacks captain Richie McCaw was also interviewed in Rio after New Zealand's shocking loss to Japan.

NZ Rugby boss Steve Tew says the 14‑12 defeat to Japan in Rio was not in the script.

The New Zealand sevens team also lost Joe Webber to injury in the embarrassing loss to Japan.

In their second match, New Zealand cruised to a convincing 28‑5 victory over Kenya.

Looking at the Rio Olympics official medal tally, China is leading with 7 gold, 3 silver and 6 bronze while USA is second with 6 gold, 8 silver and 8 bronze.
