Soldier to face trial on Criminal Court
DPP Spokesperson, Asishna Prasad confirmed to Village News that it is common practice that if a soldier is involved in a crime against a civilian he should be dealt with through the normal court proceedings in the criminal courts.
Prasad said if both the victim and the complainant are soldiers, only then will the accused person face a military court martial panel.
And while the Police maintain that they are still consulting the Army Legal Unit and the DPP's office on the matter, Prasad confirms the DPP's Office is not part of any such consultations.
The solider implicated in the alleged murder of Verebasaga is yet to be charged despite the green light given to the Police to proceed with laying charges against him.
It was earlier confirmed that the soldier was to be charged by Nausori police when Army Officers arrived and took him into Military custody where he remains without charges being laid against him.
