Soap making creates new opportunities
About 30 unemployed people of Verata village and Vunivivi settlement participated in a training programme last week on how to make cold pressed soap.
The soap making training was conducted by Ron and Sandra Craig of the Purple Camel Soap Company of New Zealand at the Natural Oils of Fiji Factory in Kalabu.
Natural Oils of Fiji Managing Director Keith Cameron said this type of training is a win-win situation for both parties because it given the company a chance to give something back to the community while the unemployed acquire skills through the training.
Mesake Ratabua a participant from Verata village said they enjoyed the training and were looking forward to earning a living with their newly acquired skills.
Malcolm Bossley, Program manager of Integrated Human Resources Development Programme said the 30 participants will have the opportunity to either gain permanent employment with Natural Oils of Fiji or form a group in the village to supply soap to the company directly, with the possibility of earning up to $250 a week.
