Former All Blacks assistant coach Wayne Smith is confident his new charges at the Chiefs can turn things around despite a disastrous start to the new Super Rugby season.

A 23-19 home ground loss to the Highlanders with the higher rated Blues and Crusaders to play next was bad enough, but to lose key players with long-term injuries is a real setback for the team.

Smith said patience and composure were needed on attack to build pressure.

Ben Afeaki, Toby Smith, halfback Brendon Leonard and winger Lelia Masaga are out injured and will not be playing against Blues at 6.35pm this Friday.

In another match on Friday, Rebels will take on Waratahs at 8.40pm.
