High court judge Justice Nazhat Shameem today sentenced a man to six years imprisonment after he was found guilty of dealing in illicit drugs.

The court heard that Michael Ashley Chandra between 7th and 8th April 2005 engaged in dealing with another person for the sale of illicit drugs weighing more than 2 kgs which was hidden at a relative’s place without their knowledge.

Chandra's lawyer told the court that he was a taxi driver and that he was looking after a family but Judge Shameem said that Chandra had put his family's life at risk by hiding the drugs at their house.

Judge Shameem sentenced him to 6 years imprisonment and further ordered that the drugs be disposed of under supervision of the officer in charge of the High Court registry within seven days of sentence.
