The situation is worsening in the Lautoka area as flood waters have started to rise in certain areas forcing people to move to higher ground.
Western Police spokesperson Wame Bautolu said several people are now stranded in the city as they have no means of transport and a number of evacuation centers are now open.
Bautolu said some homes are also flooded and they are now advising people in the low lying areas to move to higher ground.
Lautoka resident Kata said they are stranded in their office and can see billboards and tree branches being torn apart by the strong winds.
In Nadi, the business community is bracing for the worst and Nadi Chamber of Commerce President Dr Ram Raju said from past experiences, people are not taking any risks and making the necessary arrangements.
Nadi police confirmed that while heavy rain continues and the winds are getting stronger there are no reports of flooding as yet from the Nadi area.
In Rakiraki, some houses in Rewasa, Rakiraki, have been damaged due to strong winds.
Resident Vijay Nand said people in Rewasa are now moving to higher ground as the water level in the river is rising.
Subhash Chand of Yasiyasi, Tavua, said strong winds have destroyed their farms.
Police confirm the Korotale and Rewasa bridges in Rakiraki are under four feet of water and closed to all traffic.
