Situation In Labasa Worsens
Police Spokesperson, Atunaisa Sokomuri confirms they received a report from a village in Korotari at midday today that water level in the river is rising.
According to Sokomuri, Police Officers could not reach the village as the road leading to Korotari is now flooded.
About 15 houses are located next to the Korotari River and this area was badly hit during Cyclone Ami.
One family from the Korotari area is now moving to an evacuation center as the Korotari river continues to rise.
DISAMC Coordinator Northern Samu Saudraunu confirms that the levels in the Labasa river in the town area is also rising rapidly.
Police Spokesperson Atu Sokomuri also confirms that they have just received a call that five families need assistance to move to higher ground from the Korotari area.
The Korotari Arya School has been opened as an evacuation center.
Meanwhile, in Urata Bobale, flood water levels are also rising in the Qawa river and people residing in nearby areas are urged to move to higher grounds.
A resident, Birja Nand Sharma confirms about 10 houses are now in danger of getting surrounded by flood waters.
In Korovatu, Resident Dev Kumar says flood waters are rising in the low lying areas and four houses are now in danger of being flooded.
Commissioner Northern, Inia Seruiratu confirms that heavy rain is continuing. He confirms that several roads in Labasa and Savusavu remain closed to traffic due to flooding.
The evacuation centres which are active in Labasa are the Sangam Primary School, Naqai Community Hall, Bulileka Secondary School, Valebasoga Secondary School, Qawa Primary School, Civic Centre, Vunimoli Secondary School and Korotari Indian College.
