Lawyer Abhay Singh has filed legal action against the Chief Registrar Ana Rokomokoti for refusing to issue a practicing certificate to him to practice law in Fiji.

Singh told Fijivillage news that he had filed contempt of court proceedings against Rokomokoti for allegedly breaching a Fiji Court of Appeal Order issued in relation to his case.

Singh said he had also filed an appeal against the decision not to issue him a Practicing certificate on the grounds of alleged bias and that the decision is inconsistent with order from the Court of Appeal.

In a statement issued yesterday afternoon, Rokomokoti said the conviction of Singh in 2004 forms the main basis for the decision as Singh was prosecuted for among other offences, attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Rokomokoti said she also took into account the guilty plea by Singh to the offence which was on his own accord.

The Chief Registrar said the offence was regarded by the High Court as a substantive offence and not an attempt.

Rokomokoti said relying on section 44(1) of the Legal Practitioners Decree 2009, Singh's application has been refused and he is no longer permitted to practice law.
