High achieving secondary school long distance runner, Inia Sili could end Fiji’s 12 year gold medal drought in the 800 metres when the Pacific Games starts next Friday.
After recording a time of 1 minute 55 seconds in the Coca Cola Games, Sili is one of the top favourites that will competing for gold in Papua New Guinea.
Fiji’s Isireli Naikelekelevesi last won gold in this event in 2003.
Sili’s main competitor will be Kaminiel Matlaun from PNG who is currently running a time of 1 minute 54 seconds.
Inia Sili is one of the four athletes that has been awarded a 2 year scholarship to study in the United States.
He was the lone Senior Boy’s athlete for Suva Grammar School in this year’s Coca‑Cola Games and is from Wailevu, Savusavu.
The Shop and Save Fiji Athletics team is aiming to win 8 gold medals in the Pacific Games.
44 gold medals are up for grabs in athletics.
The Pacific Games will be held from next Friday to the 18th of next month.
