The Fiji Shipping Corporation is currently faced with the shortage of vessels to engage in servicing the outer islands.

Chairman Captain Victor Fatiaki said in the last few weeks they have not been able to renew franchise contracts with the five vessels namely the MV Sealink, MV Bawaqa, MV Cagi Mai Ba, MV Tunatuki II and the MV Westerland, due to many reasons.

Fatiaki said one route of concern to them is Rotuma and while they do sympathize with the people of Rotuma during these difficult times, there is just no suitable vessel available to meet the demand of shipping services.

He adds most of the routes that are not being serviced regularly is due to the fact that shipping companies view them as being uneconomical.
