It is an aim to do better than the last Pacific Games but much lower than our best ever performance in past games.

The Shop and Save Fiji Athletics team is aiming to win 8 gold medals during the Pacific Games in PNG next month.

Coach Albert Miller says they are targeting to win four gold medals each in the men’s and women’s categories.

Miller says they are hoping to win gold in the men’s 100m and 200m from Banuve Tabakaucoro, the 4x100m and Leslie Copeland in the Javelin event.

In the women’s category, they are aiming to win gold in the high jump from Shawntell Lockington, Milika Tuivanuvou who will be participating in shot put, the 4x100m and 4x400m events.

In the last Pacific Games in 2011, the Athletics team won 5 gold medals which only came from the men’s category. The girls did not win any gold medal in athletics.

Fiji won the highest number of gold medals in the 2003 Pacific Games in Fiji which was 17.

In the 2007 Pacific Games, Fiji won 12 gold medals in athletics, and in the 1995 Pacific Games Fiji bagged 14 gold medals.

44 gold medals are up for grabs in athletics in this year’s Pacific Games.

The Pacific Games will be held from the 4th to the 18th of next month.
