Several evacuations centres now active
Quminakelo also confirms that all the evacuation centers in the Rewa area are occupied due to rising flood waters and strong winds causing damages to several homes in the Rewa delta.
DISMAC is trying to get confirmation on the number of people who are at the various evacuation centers.
Meanwhile, villagers in Dakuivuna and Wailotua in Wainibuka have been evacuated to the Naiyala Secondary School as strong winds and heavy rain continue to hit the areas.
Naiyala Secondary School chairman Tamai Sai said that the roofs of some houses in Dakuivuna village have been blown away due to strong winds with more than 20 people now at the Naiyala School.
He added that students who are staying at the Naiyala High School dormitory are safe while the classrooms are been used as a evacuation centre for nearby villages.
Close to 16 families in Lutu village in Wainibuka are now taking shelter in their village community hall after their homes flooded and some roofs were blown away.
Turaga-ni-koro Tevita Wai-si-valu said that those who are not affected are also in the village hall as they believe that this is one of the worst disasters in their lives.
He added that strong winds were experienced in the village at 4pm although it was advised that it will affect them in the evening.
Tavua college has been opened up as an evacuation centre.
Principal, Brij Deo said people can take shelter at Tavua College.
He also added that it has started raining and the condition is changing.
Meanwhile, Urman Furniture's Feroz Khan said if it gets worse, people can take shelter at his residence and he can accommodate at least 50 people.
