Service station attendants soon to be redundant
Fijivillage has managed to obtain a brochure from the Fiji Fuel Retailers Association titled "Help Yourself" which stated that from October 20th, 2010, motorists will not have to wait for service from attendants, as they will be able to operate the pumps themselves.
The brochure said it is the same system as in Supermarkets but with some important differences.
These differences are highlighted as safety measures when filling fuel in a vehicle.
The decision is expected to have a significant impact on service station attendants, many of whom are often from poor back grounds and working at service stations is their only source of making a living.
There are 57 Fiji Service Station Association members in the country and 19 non members in operation and the association had earlier stated that while the price of fuels increase, the percentage mark up allowed by operators has not been reviewed over years.
It had said that his is taking a toll on service station operators and many are unable to afford to pay for attendants.
When contacted this morning, Association Secretary John Philip said they will be calling a press conference on the matter today and refused to make any further comments at this stage.
