Service Station tries to help staff
Director of Supreme Fuel Rajesh Patel said they have approximately 80 attendants around Viti Levu and while they will sustain one attendant per 8 hour shift for some time, they will not be making the attendants redundant.
The Director of Tradewinds Marine Limited John Phillip who runs Total Hibiscus in Suva, Total Lami and Total Lautoka Autoport said they have not laid off any workers yet while Kundan Singh has so far laid off 11 employees from different sites.
Mobil Oil Fiji which has 21 sites across the country will also not lay off any staff.
However, manager Michael Roy said they will be out there to educate the drivers on how to use the petrol pump and to fill the cars.
Roy said the customers will still need the service station attendants to assist them with the new changes.
These service stations are members of the Fiji Fuel Retailers which has a total of 74 members.
According to the Association President Baljeet Singh, the members can no longer afford to pay their employees and that price control on retail fuel price and the increasing costs have made it impossible for them to earn a reasonable profit.
He also said they are forced to cut costs by reducing the workforce by 400 and move to self service.
The association had also asked for an increase in the markup on retail fuel price.
