Former Fiji sevens team coach Waisale Serevi has started his new job with the Papua New Guinea Rugby Union.

Serevi last month signed a 4-year-contract to be their sevens coaching director.

He will be in Port Moresby today, where the Papua New Guinea Rugby Union will be conducting trials to select its final squad for the Mini Pacific Games Sevens rugby competition.

PNGRU president Richard Sapias said they will start from "ground zero" in trying to rebuild the team for the future and this was the first step in that process.

He said the players selected from various centres will be put through a gruelling one day trial under the watchful eyes of new coach Serevi.

Serevi, who is known as the greatest sevens player ever, has taken on the mammoth task to bring back some lost glory on the International Rugby Board world sevens circuit.
